Band to defend title

CURRENT Yorkshire brass band champions Brighouse and Rastrick will defend the title tomorrow evening.

The band, also the National Champion Band of Great Britain, will be favourites to retain the trophy.

Pushing them hard will be Black Dyke, of Queensbury, and Hebden Bridge Band is also competing in the top championship section.

There are no Calderdale bands in the first section but Clifton and Lightcliffe compete in the second section.

Elland and Huddersfield/Ripponden are in the third section and the fourth section has Clifton and Lightcliffe B and Friendly Band (Sowerby Bridge).

A total of 57 bands will be taking part in the Yorkshire Brass Band Championships at St George’s Hall, Bradford.

Four bands from the championship section will go on and represent Yorkshire in the National Championships to be held at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The winner and runner-up from the lower sections will represent the county at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain to be held in September at Cheltenham. Weekend schedule, championship section, 5pm tomorrow; first section 9.15am tomorrow; second section, 2.45pm today; third section, 12.15pm tomorrow; four section, 10.30am today.
