Music lover packed the main hall at Brooksbank School, Elland, to see the internationally renowned Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band perform supported by local stars Elland Silver Band.
Elland Silver provided an excellent warm up, supplemented by some entertaining commentary from Musical Director, Daniel Brooks. The rousing programme featuring an exhilarating performance of Fire and Sword justified Elland Silver’s status as 2nd Section Yorkshire Champions. The set also showcased two extremely talented young musicians from Elland Silver’s award winning youth band.
The final treat from Elland was a full-bodied performance of two movements from Dvorak’s New World Symphony.
It was then the turn of the mighty Grimethorpe to take centre stage. The resulting performance left amazed students wide-mouthed and loyal enthusiasts over the moon as Grimethorpe produced a storming performance, teaming with
technical brilliance and peppered with comical wit.
The audience listened, spellbound as Grimethorpe began with Where Eagles Sing by Paul Lovatt-Cooper and ended with a full-bloodied performance of An American Tale.
For the grand finale, both bands crammed the stage and delivered an astonishing performance of Sandy Smith’s Latin American number: Valero.
