POLICE are warning of a scam trying to con people into handing over thousands of pounds.
The ploy sees pensioners targeted by high-pressure salesmen trying to get them to buy shares in reputable companies and banks.
West Yorkshire Police say inquiries so far show victims appear to have bought shares in the past and are often retired professionals. Fraudsters are getting hold of their contact details and calling them with limited-time offers. Officers say people have been parting with huge amounts of cash.
Detective Inspector Steven Taylor said: “We believe this scam may have been running for a number of years and we are seeing victims from all over West Yorkshire. You wouldn’t give thousands of pounds worth of your savings to a stranger on the street, so do not do it over the phone in this pressurised way.”
