A woman who won a whopping £50,000 when playing bingo will split the cash prize with her friend who was playing alongside her on the night.

When friends Beverley Tinkler, 60 and Debora Sturman, 50, stepped through the doors of the Halifax branch of the Mecca Bingo hall, neither imagined how the night would unfold.

The friends, who have known each other for 35 years, receieved free tickets for the new ‘Firecracker’ showcase event and while both knew Beverley had a full house as she marked the number 70 and bellowed “bingo”, neither were aware that the prize was a staggering £50,000 and they would each return home £25,000 richer.

Retired mum-of-two Beverley, of Siddal, said: “We both screamed and Deborah was getting really excited.

“The atmosphere was brilliant, people came to say congratulations and everyone was clapping and cheering. “Saturday isn’t usually a big night for money, it seemed like a fluke and my family didn’t believe me when I told them.”

The pair, who usually enjoy a night at the bingo with a group of friends once a week, say they always share their winnings no matter how big or small.

Debora, a financial support worker from Liversedge, said: “I was shaking for about 20 minutes afterwards, I was so excited. “I plan to go on holiday, get a new phone and treat my nephews, but the money will also allow me to work part-time and complete my college course in Employment Law.”
