A DERELICT hillside will be transformed with an estate of 120 houses.
Councillors have agreed to allow the properties to be built on the site of the derelict Blackley Brickworks, at Elland,
The scheme received 56 letters of support but ward councillor John Ford (Con) felt there was no need for more affordable housing in Elland and that too many homes were being crammed onto the site.
Councillor Pat Allen (Lib-Dem, Elland) told Calderdale Council Planning Committee that the land had been available for employment use for 20 year but there were no takers.
John Williams, the agent for developers Metnor Blackley Ltd said they had struck the right balance with the development. He said they had agreed to fund Metro cards for residents for 12 months and 10 per cent of the housing would be low cost.
The committee approved the outline application.
