Boston United v FC Halifax Town: Changes for cup clash

BOSS Neil Aspin says his Town side to face Premier Division Boston in the Unibond League Cup tonight (7.45) will be competitive.

But that has not stopped him from pledging to rest some of his star performers with important league battles to fight in the coming weeks.

The Shay chief will start all five of the players who were on the bench against Wakefield at the weekend - Phil Senior, Mark Peers, James Riley, Mark Hotte and Dan Codman - as well as Luke Richardson in the away quarter final clash.

And he is also set to include some of the youngsters who played in the fourth round win over North Ferriby United a fortnight ago, a game in which Sanchez Heffernan and George Fry both started.

"We have to get the balance right," said Aspin, who has consistently shuffled his pack for midweek cup ties this season.

"If Boston field a strong side we don't want to suffer a big defeat.

"We need to be as competitive as we can without over-stretching ourselves."

Richardson scored in Town's win over Ferriby but has not played since - and the same applies to Senior who was the shoot out hero with a couple of penalty saves.

And despite not regarding the League Cup as a major priority, Aspin knows that whoever plays will want to do his best.

"It is unfair to ask any player not to give 100 per cent," he said. "These lads need to play and need to impress.

"These games might be the only ones I have to judge them on."

One thing that is certain is that anyone carrying a knock from Saturday's game will not be risked.

And that could include Richard Marshall who reported a tight hamstring at Wakefield.

Aspin is required to field seven of the players who featured in Saturday's squad tonight.

The five substitutes at College Grove and Richardson will be joined by at least a couple of the weekend starters.

"There could be up to three players who started on Saturday starting again tonight," said Aspin. "They will be replaced at half time."
