A strong contingent from Sheffield took part in last Saturday's qualifier but tghe players who were progressed were James Wilcox from Leeds and Peter Bound from Shrewsbury.

In the top half of the draw, Wilcox was always in control to register 21-17 wins against Peter Thomas (Shrewsbury) and Steve Davis (Liverpool. His next opponent was Chris Brown, who had beaten Keighley's Bryan Harrison to 12 and Shrewsbury's Martin Lloyd to seven, and he led 14-6 and 18-11 before winning 21-17.
