PLANS to build a care home and three shops at the junction of Birkby Lane, in Bailiff Bridge, Brighouse.

Councillors said there were some serious problems that needed to be addressed by the applicant, the CP Group.

They felt that the 56-bed care home would be in the wrong position and should be closer to the residential properties in Axminster Drive and the three shops, including a Co-operative store, should be closer to Birkby Lane.

Councillor Martin Peel (Con, Sowerby Bridge) said the design was wrong and would not contribute to the amenity value of the home.

Applicant Guy Evans told Calderdale Council Planning Committee that moving the buildings would not create the best street scene.

The 17 letters of objection focused on noise disturbance and the amount of traffic using Axminster Drive.

Spokeswoman Ruth Craven said: “There will be a vast increase in traffic which will result in a dangerous and hazardous road which was not built for heavy goods vehicles.”

Ward Councillor Graham Hall backed the scheme.
