Burlesque festival organisers are celebrating after Hebden Royd Town Council voted to rescind a decision banning the entertainment from a major venue in the town.

The council’s Picture House Committee had previously refused to allow Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival to hold an event at the cinema as part of next year’s festival in May.

But on Wednesday councillors decided to overturn the decision, which was greeted with applause by festival organisers and supporters.

One of the organisers, Heidi Waddington, aka Heidi Bang Tidy, told the meeting: “We do really appreciate it and that we have been given the opportunity to voice our opinions.”

Outside the council chamber she said the change of heart, resulting in a new sub-committee to formulate a booking policy at the Picture House, might not have come in time for the 2014 festival, which will take place in Hebden Bridge from May 2 to 4.

Plans are now taking shape for the event, even if no Picture House show materialises.
