police have appealed for information after a spate of conifer tree fires around Sowerby, which left residents puzzled when white ash landed in their gardens.

Barbara Smith, 71, woke at her home in Tillotson Avenue to find her back garden covered in a mysterious white powder earlier this week.

She originally thought it may have come down with the rain.

It wasn’t until days later that she heard a nearby conifer had caught fire on Monday night. The ash from the fire had strewn Mrs Smith and her neighbours’ gardens.

She said: “The garden was totally white.

“I just didn’t know what it was. I didn’t have a clue.”

Police are understood to be investigating a spate of tree fires, including at the back of Tillotson Avenue and another in Triangle on Wednesday May 11.

Anyone with information about the fires is asked to contact PC Kate Crowther via 0845 6060606.
