£4m creative centre to open in summer
A DERELICT mill in Halifax - once home to pioneering fashion designer and textile entrepreneur Elsie Whiteley - will reopen for business next July.
The transformation of the mill, built in 1868, into one of the region's most creatively inspiring, futuristic work places is well under way.
And this week the developers of the Elsie Whiteley Innovation Centre, Hopwood Lane, confirmed it was set to open its doors for business in July 2006.
The 4 million business hub will form a unique base for digital and new media companies to develop their business across local and international markets.
The scheme, which launched in April, is a joint project by Action Halifax under the European Union Urban II programme, Yorkshire Forward, Calderdale Council and Halifax Opportunities Trust.
In keeping with the mill's focus on creativity and productivity, the development, which will be managed by the trust when finished, will provide more than 30,000sq ft of contemporary, flexible office space designed to meet the needs of forward-thinking and fast-moving businesses operating in global markets.
The design of the centre is being overseen by Leeds-based Architects, Alan Tod. It features floor-to-ceiling windows guaranteeing natural light in every office, a private prayer room, healthy eating caf, an art gallery and indoor and outdoor space to encourage creative thinking.
Barbara Harbinson, trust chief executive, said: "We're already taking inquiries from a diverse range of companies from both inside and outside of the region and we're confident this ambitious project will be a major step forward in showing what Halifax has to offer as a thriving, creative base which enables a new generation of companies to develop."
