40 years of clocking in

Ian Machon could hardly miss the passing of time as he completed 40 years working for Whiteley's Sheet Metal Works.

For many years he signed in and out of the building using a clocking-in machine he helped build when he worked at the former Simplex and Gledhill time recording company of West Parade, Halifax.

The machine is now an antique and no longer in use, but has pride of place at the firm in Wheatley, Halifax company which is part of Boxford Holdings.

"I made parts for the machines which we clock in and out of at work, although those models are not used any more," said Mr Machon of Moor Lane, Illingworth, Halifax, who is now a production manager at the company.

"The old clock is kept in reception as an ornament – although it is still working, just like me," he said.

"I have enjoyed working here. It is unusual for someone to work at a company for so long.

"I still like working on engineering, working with many other people and with metal."

Whiteley's marked 61-year-old Mr Machon's long-service achievement with a celebratory lunch.
