Best new charity: Work of volunteers rewarded
THEY were only granted charity status in June but already Weekend Care have established themselves as a much loved organisation among the elderly and disabled people it serves.
The group has built on its 17 years of experience, garnered through predecessor Sunday Care, to become officially Calderdale's Best New Charity, sponsored by Nestle.
Judges at the Courier's Community and Environment Awards chose the group, not only for the meals and activities it provides for those it served, but crucially for also giving hard-pressed carers vital time off to recharge their batteries.
Co-ordinator Mary Rumble, who has been with the group 12 years, said: "I didn't expect to win.
"Everyone says that I imagine but it's true.
"You just do your bit but it is lovely to get recognised.
"Weekend Cares is built on the hard work of so many volunteers, though, so this is for all of them too, we've all earned this together."
She added she hoped the good publicity would result in a boost for both helper numbers and the amount of people using the service.
