Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce has said it would prefer to see the Government renegotiate our relationship with Europe than offer a simple in/out referendum.

Steve Leigh, head of policy at the chamber, has said businesses reap the benefits of being able to freely trade across Europe, but said he would like to see a renegotiation of the rules.

He said: “It’s a very complex issue, and there’s no room in the yes or no question for nuances - there’s a lot about the EU that makes doing business in Europe much easier, but we would prefer it to be less of an onerous thing to be members of Europe with all of the meddling that is involved.

“From a trade perspective, staying in Europe would be preferable, but there are some very strong feelings about European law and law-making and the feeling that we’re not in control of our destiny.”
