Fleece wins battle to open until midnight

Renovation work at the Fleece Inn, Barkisland.

Renovation work at the Fleece Inn, Barkisland.

A village pub undergoing a £1 million investment will be allowed to open until midnight.

The Fleece Inn, Ripponden Bank, Barkisland, applied to vary its licence which was approved by Calderdale Council’s licensing committee despite several objections from residents.

Before the meeting the application was amended from 1 am to midnight and had the backing - with conditions - of the police and environmental health officers.

Adrian Burke, of the Blue Moon Pub Company, said it was a successful business running food-led outlets including the Malthouse, Rishworth; The Milestone, Ripponden; and the Sun Inn, Lightcliffe.

He said he understood residents’ concerns but The Fleece didn’t want to attract rowdy drinkers.

“The type of business everybody fears is not what we want to achieve,” said Mr Burke.

The redevelopment includes a function room and five bedrooms and the Fleece is expected to re-open before Christmas.

The hearing heard the pub company had exceeded the conditions agreed to limit noise nusiance.

Ripponden Parish Coun Alan Watson said there were still fears The Fleece would revert back to its chequered history.
