Stage is set for new jobs at Sowerby Bridge firm

A Sowerby Bridge manufacturer of stage and theatre drapes is set to create more than 10 new jobs as part of an expansion.

J&C Joel was established in 1978 and is now one of the world’s leading manufacturers of flame retardant fabrics and flooring for the entertainment and event industries.

The company employs more than 100 people, exports goods to more than 80 different countries and has five offices around the world in Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, Macau and Hong Kong.

Based in Corporation Mill, the business has worked on the London 2012 Olympic Games and the 2014 Sochi Winter Games and the New York University campus in Abu Dhabi.

James Wheelwright, CEO at J&C Joel, said: “This is an exciting time for the company. Our business has expanded significantly over recent years and we want to

continue to do so. Our global stage engineering projects are growing considerably and we need to reflect this by creating new positions within the firm to help achieve our growth plans.”

J&C Joel’s board has also undergone a recent restructure with Fiona Blackett stepping down as group sales director to return to her native Australia. She will remain with the company in a business development role.

Fiona will be replaced by Stuart Coomber who becomes sales director for the J&C Joel Group. Stuart brings with him a wealth of experience at board level and has previously worked in underground construction and pharmaceutical packaging.

Tony Griffiths, who has been with the company for 12 years, will also take up a new role as head of stage engineering projects to focus on expected growth.

James added: “We are continuing to strengthen our management team to ensure we are in the best position for future growth. These changes are a positive step forward to make certain we have the best team to deliver first class customer service across the globe.”
