HGV Class One driver Terry Akroyd has just clocked up 40 years service with Goodall Transport, Sowerby Bridge.

During that time he has travelled around four million miles behind the wheel - without ever causing an accident or having customers complain about him to his employer.

Halifax-born Terry spent the first 13 years of his HGV driving career with Thornber’s, of Mytholmroyd, before joining Goodall.

He now travels the UK with regular overnight stays in his cab delivering mostly food and drink products.

He said vehicles and equipment had improved over the years but he misses the old overnight accommodation parks were lorry drivers used to meet up - but he still has no plans to retire.

“Work keeps me going and I have done nothing else and you can still get to socialise in the evening if you know where to go despite overnight places for drivers to stay dwindling away.

“And, I enjoy working for a family firm.”

He has also driven on the continent and says he is happy to drive anywhere and has no particular favourite route.

Terry was presented with vouchers to mark his 40 years service which will go towards a cruise.

He is married to Emily and the couple live near Wilsden, Bradford.
