Uncertain future for 90 staff with closure of Elland warehouse

Bibby Distribution, Lowfields, Elland

Bibby Distribution, Lowfields, Elland

Ninety jobs are at risk following the decision to close a distribution centre at Elland.

Bibby Distribution is shutting its warehouse at Lowfields next month due to the ending of the main contract managed from the site.

Other contracts managed from Elland will be relocated to alternative Bibby Distribution centres.

Divisional director Mark Wilson said talks are continuing with affected staff.

“We will do everything we can to re-deploy as many people as possible, either under TUPE or to other Bibby Distribution sites,” he said.

“It is possible there may be some redundancies but this won’t be confirmed until the end of March when our consultation process with staff is complete.”

An affected worker told the Courier the decision had stunned staff and left many in limbo.

He understood 25 jobs were available at Yeadon.

“The mood is one of being fed-up,” he said.

“No-one knows what is happening.”

Drivers, administrative and warehouse staff, all work out of the Elland centre which offers services covering distribution, logistic support and warehousing.

Bibby Distribution is a leading logistics provider in the UK operating from more than 100 locations and employing 2,500 staff.

The company has worked with dairy firm Arla Foods since 1996 and says its site at Elland was specifically commissioned to house Arla Foods ambient temperature products.

Arla has been the “anchor” customer at Elland where Bibby’s northern distribution fleet is also centred.

Bibby’s mission statement is: “Logistics without limits.”
