Business in the environment: Recognition for 'Green God'

A GREEN God - that was how judges at the Courier's Community and Environment Awards described Alex Kilner.

It was his solo joinery business, Kilner Green Woodworkers, which was named the best Business In The Environment, sponsored by Sita, at Thursday's ceremony.

And the 47-year-old, of Halifax, could not have been more delighted with the glowing recognition.

"This is really important, I'm so pleased." he said.

Mr Kilner said he became increasingly concerned about the environment in his early years as a joiner when he saw vast amounts of tropical rainforest wood being wasted - so he put his money where his mouth was and set up his own green firm eight years ago.

He said: "I seek out sustainable and non-polluting materials, minimise my use of fossil fuels, and recycle and reuse as much as I can in whatever job I do. I would say that every bit of timber which enters my workshop gets used.

"I urge my customers and suppliers to be the same."

He added all wood shavings go to nearby horse stables for beddings while small offcuts are collected to make small items such as hairslides or stools.

Everything in his workshop from paints to envelopes to electricity supplier is the greenest option he can find.
