Card-free Christmas is boost for recyler

A PLASTICS and rubber recycler has teamed up with a community recycling company to take part in a "greener" Christmas.

British Recycled Products, based in Hebden Bridge, is this year sending only electronic cards.

And it is giving 10 per cent of its January turnover to social enterprise Kerbside – which pioneered doorstep recycling in Calderdale and offers employment to those excluded from work opportunities.

The company has been locked in a battle for survival since the council signed a new waste contract with multinational firm Sita.

BRP transforms plastic and rubber waste – otherwise destined for landfill – into alternative construction materials and outdoor furniture.

Jason Elliot, BRP director, said: "We feel that the Christmas spirit is more about goodwill to all than getting yet another card and corporate gift from a supplier.

"Judging by the incredibly positive response we've had back, both locally and nationally, it would seem that our friends and customers are happy to support us with this move."

Co-director Chris Griffiths, added: "As we have a large number of clients right across the UK we estimate the cost of sending cards and goodies out to them would probably equate to 10 per cent of our January turnover.

"Choosing to give this money to Kerbside instead was one of the easiest business decisions we've ever made. Like us, they are in the recycling business, so partnering up seemed logical.

"We are sending the Christmas cards electronically, together with a brief explanation about why we're supporting Kerbside and the option of an easy way for them to help, should they wish to."

BRP is urging locals to contact the council's chief executive, Owen Williams, and tell him they want to continue with Kerbside's services.

Kerbside chief executive Paul Brannigan said: "Kerbside is very grateful for the donation and support from British Recycled Products.

"This shows that social enterprises can be a catalyst to inspire the private sector to get more involved in the community, which creates a win-win situation for all.

"We are aiming to show the beauty of true partnerships that benefit everyone."
