Ceremony celebrates all that is great about our district

A CEREMONY that celebrated all that was great about our district - that was the view of Calderdale Council which sponsored the inaugural Community and Envir-onment Awards.

Kirsten England, community services director, attended the event at Berties, Elland, to congratulate winners.

Sponsorship by Calderdale Council allowed all the shortlisted nominees to attend the gala dinner free of charge.

And she was delighted the hard work done by individuals, businesses, voluntary groups and charities to improve the area and its environment had been so richly acknowledged.

She said: "These awards recognise just a few of the vast numbers of people helping to make Calderdale an even better place to live.

"By supporting citizens to achieve these aims, the council hopes to contribute towards making Calderdale a district where individuals, organisations and businesses can flourish.

"We want all our citizens to feel part of their local community, and value our spectacular countryside and architecture.

"We want this to be a place where differences and diversity are celebrated and seen as a positive strength of the district: a place where people get on well together, and work together for change."

Now, to illustrate that commitment to the environment and community, the council is to offer grants of up to 3,000 for voluntary and community groups doing their bit to make Calderdale a clean, safe, attractive and thriving place for all residents, workers and visitors.

The next application deadline is 1st November 2008. For more information or an application pack, please phone 01422 393272 or email rachel.jones@calderdale.gov.uk
