Charity of the year: Helping those vulnerable familes
IT is a groundbreaking project which offers friendship, guidance and practical help to vulnerable families in some of Calderdale's poorest neighbourhoods - but it has no guaranteed funding to continue after March 2009.
Now Home Start Calderdale, which has trained dozens of volunteers to assist hundreds of families, is hoping that winning Charity of the Year, sponsored by Harveys of Halifax, will help them in their bid for continued cash-injections.
Linda Crowther, senior coordinator with the group, said: "We are in talks with Calderdale Council and Calderdale PCT at the moment but of course there's no guarantee of funding.
"Hopefully winning this prize demonstrates the value of the service we provide, and will be a persuasive argument to keep us going."
They walked away with the gong at the Courier's inaugural Community and Environment Awards, where judges said they were particularly impressed by the positive feedback from those the charity helped.
Ms Crowther said: "I'm absolutely bursting my sides with pride.
"This award is for every volunteer who has worked with us over the years, for everyone who has given time and for everyone who has been involved."
