Southdale is a national construction and development specialist with its headquarters in Halifax.
It also operates from a network of offices in the north west, north east and the midlands regions.
With its annual turnover in excess of £63m, the business provides new build, refurbishment and asset management services to a range of public and private sector customers.
Southdale works within a number of sectors including affordable and private housing, health care, community and education providing a number of tailored services including land sourcing, sustainable building, community regeneration and retrofit or renewal of existing buildings to enhance sustainability and prolong their lifespan.
The business was founded in 1988 as partnership between Chris Harris and John O’Hara who were both specialists in property refurbishment and construction.
The name Southdale has now become synonymous with high quality, cost effective construction services which are delivered by more than 180 directly employed skilled, experienced and approachable staff across the north and the midlands regions.
Southdale completed their first new build development at Prospect Mill, Skircoat Green in Halifax and following a string of other successful schemes, the company established their first offices in 1991 at Haley Hill in Boothtown.
One of the earliest members of staff who joined back then was Beverley Robinson, who is now Southdale’s HR director responsible for the company’s strategic recruitment, selection, training and development.
As the company grew over the next few years, in 1994 the decision was taken to recruit Paul Moore who, after a number of years spent gaining experience across the business, later became Southdale’s managing director. Paul leads the direction of the business today.
The expansion of Southdale in those first 10 years led to a move into larger premises in a former engineering building at Westholme Road in Halifax where the company’s head office is still situated.
Major milestones for Southdale include its largest housing scheme known as St Anns in York. This development commenced in May 2009 and was constructed in partnership with Fabrick Housing Group and York Housing Association.
The £20m scheme involved the demolition of 100 prefabricated bungalows owned by the City of York Council, which were replaced with a new 196 unit Extra Care Scheme, comprising 41 apartments, 60 bungalows and 95 houses for affordable rent and discounted sale.
Southdale also completed its first extra care scheme at Melrose in Elland in 2009 for Pennine Housing. This involved the new build construction of a 52 unit development complete with restaurant, hairdressers, communal lounge, spa and laundry worth £5.5m.
The company also constructed its first new build medical centre at Brig Royd in Ripponden in 2009. This £2.2m development for Apollo Health Group involved the culmination of six GP Practices, a Pharmacy, Local Authority and PCT facilities including physiotherapy, audiology, day care surgery and podiatry in the same building.
Now on site with over 25 live construction projects, Southdale has a planned and steady expansion programme which should see the business sustaining its year-on-year growth strategy. Southdale continues to maintain a strong presence across its operational regions and has never forgotten its permanent roots in Halifax.
