Courier Business Awards 2008: What the judges were looking for

All the nominations for this year's Evening Courier Business Awards are now in and the judges have picked shortlists for each category.

Here is what we have been looking for in each of those categories.

The categories business of the year and business person of the year did not require nominations but will be decided by our judges sitting down with a blank sheet of paper.

The judging panel will comprise representatives from the Courier, plus sponsors Halifax Bank of Scotland Business banking and Chadwick Lawrence solicitors, plus last year's business person of the year Roger Harvey.

THE CATEGORIES

New Business

Sponsor: Riley and Co Ltd

Established within the last two years.

Can demonstrate sound and thorough research of its market before embarking on the project.

Operating independently of any other existing business.

Carefully mapped out plan to maintain development and growth.

Clear business strategy.

Can demonstrate willingness to take and listen to proven advice.

Demonstrate innovative thinking.

Demonstrate clear understanding of the needs of a growing business.

Small to Medium Sized Business

Sponsor: Action Halifax

Turnover of less than 5million.

Fewer than 50 employees.

Demonstrate significant growth in its sector.

Demonstrate innovation.

Has a mapped out plan for future developments.

Has maintained sound financial performance.

Has a community social responsible policy in place.

Young Business Person

Sponsor: Elsie Whiteley Innovation Centre

Under 40 years of age

Displays clear understanding of what running your own business is about

Understands their business environment.

Demonstrates positive manner, enthusiasm and willingness for the role.

Understands the demands of running a business.

International Business

Sponsor: HSBC

Can demonstrate understanding of its overseas market.

Can demonstrate significant growth and development on the international scene.

Is an effective ambassador for Calderdale PLC.

Has a strong commitment to its overseas reputation.

Demonstrate positive promotion of Calderdale PLC overseas.

Helped generate links for other Calderdale businesses.

Innovator of the Year

Sponsor: Marshalls

Innovation is the lifeblood of business, but it is also the the most difficult quality to categorise and qualify.

Our winner will have demonstrated their innovative skill in one or two of several different possible ways.

For example, by:

Transforming the performance of an established business by restructuring or redirection.

Successful and creative problem-solving.

Leading a business or team through a process of radical change in order to increase efficiency and results.

Creating, discovering or inventing a new product, process or service and bringing it to market - successfully and profitably.

Finding new and marketable opportunities for existing product, plant, services or or goods.

Entrepreneur of the Year

Sponsor: Calderdale Council

The winner will be:

Someone who turned a bright business idea into revenue-generating reality.

A business person with an eye for a gap in the market - as well as the drive and knowhow to exploit it.

An example and an inspiration to those around them.

A go-getter with commercial flair in their personal make-up and the profit-gene in their DNA.

Successful nominees will ideally have created their own business to run on a low cost base but with a healthy and growing turnover.

Criteria for Manufacturing Award

Sponsor: Crosslee

This award will honour Calderdale's strength and expertise as a centre of manufacturing excellence.

The winner will demonstrate:

A modern and efficient approach to manufacturing and marketing.

A commitment to excellence in its products and service.

A highly successful trading performance, preferably based on new and improved products as well established lines.

A strategy to reach new markets and improve reach within existing ones.

Where applicable, a commitment to research and development.

A sound track record of training and passing on vital skills to new generations.

Business Person of the Year

Sponsor: Chadwick Lawrence

Can demonstrate clear leadership qualities.

Has strong financial understanding of running a business.

Is willing to mentor colleagues and other business people

Visionary in his or her field.

The person the judges believe has promoted Calderdale PLC. in the most positive light.

Business of the Year

Sponsor: Bank of Scotland Business Banking

Can demonstrate successful year on year growth in its sector.

Has strong commitment to innovation.

Has effectively promoted itself on the national and international stage.

Is shown to support its community and social responsibility policy.

Demonstrate good personnel relations.

Demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental improvements.

Can demonstrate willingness to adapt to market changes.

Lifetime achievement award

Sponsor: Business Link

This award will go to the person who in the judges' opinion has done the most throughout a long career to foster Calderdale's economic and social well-being through business, to work as a catalyst for change and to act as a champion for the district and all its people.

Our judges will be looking for:

Someone who has a passion for their business and for Calderdale

Someone who has demonstrated innovative thinking over the years.

An ambassador for Calderdale who has made a positive contribution to the district's reputation as well as its business life.

A person with the ability to spot an opportuinity and capitalise on it.

A person with vision and the leadership to carry their business forward.
