A Halifax woman has set up a business making birthday cakes for dogs.
Kath Crawford of Sowood came up with the idea after her mother-in-law sent a cake to one of Kath’s retrievers.
She then set up her business Doggie Patisserie to give dog owners a chance to pamper their pooch with treats.
“I thought it was a lovely idea in such a niche market,” said Kath.
Everything Kath bakes is hand made and contains no additives, artificial food colours and no added salt or sugar.
The first batch off the production line were cookies, but the recipes soon developed until Kath was making cupcakes and birthday cakes.
The goodies don’t include dog meat, but are baked as traditional cakes that humans would eat, taking out any ingredients such as chocolate that are harmful to dogs.
Since her website launched at the start of the month, business has been booming.
“I think it’s a new trend,” she said.
“It’s one of these things that’s already really popular in America.
“If you’re a dog lover than you understand that dogs are just another member of the family and as such you want to treat them on special occasions,” she added.
