Even more now working from home

MORE than five million people are working from home after finishing their day job.

New research carried out by Enterprise Nation, the UK's largest website for home based business, revealed the statistics.

According to its latest Home Business Report, there are also more than 2.5 million businesses operating from homes across the UK – an increase of 16 per cent over the past 12 months.

Enterprise Nation founder Emma Jones said: "Although we knew there had been a tremendous growth in home business, we had no idea that much of this was coming from the 5 – 9 trend.

"What's particularly significant is that the current economic climate is the impetus behind this trend.

"For some people it's about increasing their income to cope with a partner's redundancy while others felt uncertain about future career prospects and wanted to make sure they were better placed if they lost their job.

Insurance broker Towergate Risk Solutions, Halifax, urged home based businesses to ensure they have adequate insurance to protect against unexpected risk.

Russ Hargreaves, managing director of Towergate Risk Solutions, said: "Unfortunately many people take home business insurance for granted thinking that their traditional buildings and contents insurance will provide cover for their business.

"Home business owners need to ensure that they are fully covered for every eventuality including loss of stock through to an employee fatality which may make them and their business liable.
