A town centre bistro and bar has been shut after a downturn in trade.

The Red Pepper at Broad Street (formerly Pizza & Wine) had been run for 10 years by Stephen and Cheryl Hall.

Mr Hall said a combination of factors forced the closure.

“We have had good nights but we have to look at the overall picture, week-to-week and month-to-month, and it has not been consistent enough,” he said.

The major factor has been the neighbouring Broad Street Plaza which resulted in several more restaurants competing for trade.

“There is saturation and when that comes other places can’t survive. I would be very surprised if there are not other closures over the coming months,” said Mr Hall.

The couple had ploughed money into refurbishing the restaurant which failed to attract a buyer.

“If you get hit for too long the business becomes untenable. A small business hasn’t the back-up of the big chains to sustain things.”

The couple have found jobs in the hospitality sector and thanked customers for their support.
