Green school: Schools make the grade
IT was a category so tough even the judges could not decide between two of the entrants - so in the end they simply gave the award to both.
Old Earth Primary and Ravenscliffe High shared the award for Green School, sponsored by Provident Insurance at the Courier's Community and Environment celebration.
The judges said: "We were absolutely unable to separate these two contenders."
But being joint winners did not stop either school being delighted with the result.
Martin Moorman, deputy head at Ravenscliffe, Halifax, said: "We won the Green Flag award this year and the Yorkshire in Bloom Young People's category so this is a treble - we don't have a trophy cabinet but I suppose now we need one."
And Paul Reynolds, head of Old Earth, Elland, said: "Being green is so important in this day and age and it's a battle for hearts and minds to get that message across at schools."
He added, over the next year the school would be implementing 36 solar panels and buying two mini-buses which can run on bio-diesel.
Their award was picked up by two former students Marcus Stapley and Alice Smith.
