Green School shortlist
CALDERDALE'S future environmental credentials are in good hands, with the next generation being encouraged to go green at schools across the district.
In the battle for hearts and minds recognised by the Green School award, the judges for the Community and Environment Awards noted there were plenty doing their bit.
Not least among them was Old Earth Primary School, Elland, which made the shortlist.
Judge Nick Johnston said: "This place ticks every box - wind turbines, plans for solar powers, transport policies, a 'switch off' campaign, it's absolutely fantastic."
So too, the judges agreed, is Ravenscliffe High, Skircoat Green, Halifax, which recently became only the fourth special school in the country to be awarded international Green Flag status.
Judge Soo Nevison said: "This school has a very diverse set of pupils and for it to be achieving what it is doing is remarkable, they deserve every plaudit they get."
A partnership of schools, the Schools in Touch partnership, was another front-running contender to make the line up.
The collective, made up of Bolton Brow Primary Sowerby Bridge, Luddenden Foot Primary, Christ Church Sowerby Bridge, Old Earth Primary Elland and Triangle Primary, aims to reduce its overall carbon footprint.
Judge Pam Warhurst said: "This is going to be such a tight category."
