Jenny's ice-cream is best in county: Farm product is show highlight
ICE-CREAM made in Calderdale has been picked by international food critics to be sold in a prestigious new regional food shop and cafe.
Just Jenny's honeycomb ice-cream is made by 30-year-old dairy farmer Jenny Clarkson and her mother Jane at their family farm, Hazel Slack in Barkisland.
Its "creamy, velvety texture", made of local produce, wowed judges who were scanning Yorkshire to source the best products for new shop and cafe, Fodder.
It has been set up by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, opening next month at the Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate – but will stay open the whole year round.
Award-winning food critic Jay Rayner said: "The killer combination of crunchy honeycomb and the creamy velvety texture of proper ice cream was a real winner.
"I'm delighted to hear it comes from a local family farm. This is a great example of how food should be produced. It's delicious."
Fresh whole milk and cream from Jenny's farm are used, as well as honeycomb and crunchy cinder toffee from Dobson's sweet factory in Elland.
Jenny's father, Jim, and her brother, Richard, farm a herd of 135 Holstein/Friesian dairy cows.
The area is rich with pastureland ideal for dairy cows but the number of dairy farms has reduced from seven to two.
Two years ago, Jenny decided to make commercial ice-cream to help keep the family farm and make a better return on the milk they produced.
Jenny said: "It's taken us a bit by surprise.
"I'm overwhelmed by winning as I'm just a small producer and didn't realise I was in the running for the best ice-cream in Yorkshire.
"I'm not surprised they liked it though. It's made with the very best local ingredients and a lot of love."
Restaurants, farm shops, cinemas and delicatessens across Calderdale sell her ice-cream.
And new flavours continue to be launched.
"We want to increase our customer base and continue to produce top quality ice-cream," said Jenny.
"If we continue to grow we will take on staff at the end of the summer.
"We haven't seen any drop-back in business."
The farm has been in the family about 50 years.
