Keeping tags on military hardware: Singapore deal set to lead to more

SINGAPORE'S military will be using asset tagging equipment developed by a Calderdale electronic software developer.

The country's Ministry of Defence has bought asset tagging security systems from Halifax-based Active Tagging in its field operations.

The company based at Dean Clough is to supply 200 of its Xtag radio-frequency identification asset tagging systems, along with computer hardware and software, which will be used to protect high value equipment.

The tags, which are 25mm in diameter and 7mm thick, weigh a mere 10 grams and will be attached to the devices with a specially developed double-sided tamperproof tape.

They will be used on items ranging from robotic equipment through to laboratory research equipment and laptop computers.

Chris Bullock, managing director of Active Tagging, said: "The Xtag system will not only help to combat theft from the military, but will help ensure that equipment is kept in the correct location.

"Xtag uses active RFID technology with each unit containing a radio transmitter that sends a signal every second to show it is functioning properly.

"These messages are monitored by a dedicated PC, so they are continuously supervised."

Sensors, placed at key locations to relay signals to the computer, trigger an SMS text or e-mail to security staff.

The Singapore military wants to use Xtag in its other bases too.

And now Active Tagging is looking to sell the product to other military operations around the world.

The firm produces some of the most ultra long range electronic tagging products in the world.

Xtag uses include baby tagging, access control, asset tagging, health and safety, security, intelligent building and hospital patient wandering.
