ANIMAL waste processing firm the Leo Group is supporting a charity race with a difference at Wetherby.

The Halifax-based company is sponsoring one of six fences in the Mascot Gold Cup.

There will be neither a horse nor a jockey in sight at the event, which is held in aid of Sue Ryder on April 29.

Instead, 50 mascots will dash to the finish line, including Sammy the Sunflower, better known as Leo Group employee Paul Whalen.

Last year the event raised more than £15,000.

Catherine Horn, of the Leo Group, said: “Sue Ryder is an excellent charity and does a tremendous amount of work in communities across the country, including helping people in and around Oxenhope with its Manorlands Hospice.

“Last year, they approached us for financial support from our community fund, which ensures the continuation of counselling for bereaved young children and young adults.”

The firm will lay on transport for members of counselling groups and their families to get to the race.

It will also help to pay for a weekend bereavement session in the Yorkshire Dales.
