The search is on for a home-grown beauty queen as Calderdale prepares to host its first Miss England qualifier.

The winner of the Miss West Yorkshire competition at the Venue, Barkisland, in March, will go on to the national pageant – giving her a shot at the Miss World crown.

Entrants will be raising cash and awareness for Elland-based Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Organiser Alexandra Devine, managing director of Envied Models, said there would be no swimwear round and she wanted to see girls of all shapes and sizes enter.

“Gone are the days where girls parade down a catwalk in bikinis to a panel of male judges,” she said.

“Nowadays the competition is more about supporting good causes and opening doors for young people.”

Instead there will be a sports round and an eco-fashion round where girls design and create outfits from recycled materials.

Alexandra said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for any young women who wish to better themselves by fund-raising for charity, promoting environmental causes and meeting fantastic people.”

As well as entry into Miss England 2012, the winner will scoop a modelling contract with Envied Models and a portfolio by Image Maker.

She will also win a bespoke evening dress by Strictly Dresses and hair services throughout the year by Hague Hair Design, plus £200.

The competition, on March 16, is sponsored by The Centre for Advanced Dentistry, which owns Park Road Dental Surgery, Halifax.
