Outstanding Individual Achievement shortlist

IF there is one thing Calderdale is not lacking when it comes to community it is individuals who are willing to do their bit.

And that was certainly reflected in the nominations for the Community and Environment Award's Outstanding Individual Achievement category.

The shortlist of three was chosen from a list of nominations positively bursting with hard work, talent and determination.

Mohammed Aslam, a former serviceman who set up Himmat to improve the educational attainment of young people in Halifax, was a prime example and one of those shortlisted.

Judge Soo Nevison said: "If you say his nickname Assie to anyone in this sector in this area they immediately know who he is and they like him. He has contributed so much, it is quite remarkable."

Joining Mr Aslam will be Holly Bottomley, manager of the Brighouse Rest Centre which opens for elderly people six days a week.

Dr Nevison said: "She has served these people for 31 years in all kinds of capacities and that is an incredible contribution to have made."

Malcolm Kielty, the architect behind the phenomenally successful Calderdale Community Coaching Trust, will make up the three.

He was nominated for "his energy and drive" in creating a central pool of coaches who could offer specific training programmes for children in and out of school.
