Park is green for go

A NEW environmentally friendly business park has been created. Ripponden Business Park uses renewable-energy technology to reduce heating costs and CO2 emissions.

Director Neville Senior said it was one of the first of its kind to use the technology as a major component. Planning requirements mean some renewable energy aspects now have to be included in developments but Mr Senior said this site far exceeded those requirements.

Natural stone and slate roofs were used to build it and air source heat pumps were installed to keep it warm. By harvesting free energy from the surrounding air they are three times more efficient than gas boilers, emitting 40 per cent less CO2.

"Compared to traditionally heated offices, they are ultra-efficient," said Mr Senior.

"Right from the beginning we wanted to make it a hi-tech office park.

"We realised the market was going to be more testing at the moment but the product is right.

"We targeted Ripponden because the demographics are there and it's a growing community. It shows you don't need a city-centre address."

Work has just been completed at the site off the A678 Oldham Road.

And expanding financial services business Mackrill Financial Management has now bought an office and moved in.

"What better endorsement to our belief than a financial advisory company joining?" said Mr Senior.

"We are providing great value for money, eco friendly, top-spec accommodation in a superb location without the traffic typical of a city- centre commute.

"It's keeping jobs in the community."

Julian and Jeremy Mackrill said the ability to buy rather than lease offices was appealing to SMEs like theirs.

There are offices for up to 200 employees at the site, with units ranging from 730 sq ft to 1500 sq ft for sale or lease.

And to help businesses struggling to raise credit against commercial property, Swedish bank Svenska Handelsbanken has backed the project.

Lawyers from Gordons' law firm's commercial property department set up the estate and then the firm's construction team advised during the building of the park.
