Council chiefs are seeking planning approval to transform the interior of Princess Buildings, opposite Halifax Town Hall.

The project is part of plans to modernise and make better use of offices in the town centre.

Princess Buildings - a grade two listed building - will be fully refurbished and given a complete redesigned interior if approval is given by councillors for the plans.

It is hoped by concentrating work in three refurbished buidings there will be a saving of £7.6 million over future years. Also, staff will be able to work smarter and deliver services more efficiently and effectively.

The other offices where staff will be based are at Mulcture House and Westgate House where work is now underway and on schedule to be completed and re-occupied by council staff in April 2014.

Also, the completed Halifax Customer First premises were opened in November 2013.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Environment, Coun Barry Collins, said: “The transformation of Princess Buildings is a crucial part of our development programme for Halifax town centre.

“English Heritage has been closely involved in the design work, to ensure that the inside of the building complements the superb facade.”
