Real night of glitz and glamour

LIVE music, exquisite food and Calderdale actor Paul Opacic were just some of the elements which made the Courier's inaugural Community and Environment Awards a real night of glitz and glamour.

A samba band from the Square Chapel, Halifax, played a lively rhythm to guests - including winners, nominees and sponsors - as they arrived in bow ties and evening dresses for a gala dinner and awards cerempo

Opening the evening at Berties, Elland, the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire and President of the Community Foundation for Calderdale Dr Ingrid Roscoe got a large cheer when she told the audience: "I love Calderdale. I love its towns, I love its villages, I love its countryside, but most of all I love its community spirit.

"You really care about one another here, you really help each other."

And after a cornet solo introduction by Matthew Shaw, of Northern Orchestral Enterprise's Future Heroes project, Paul Opacic began presenting the ceremony itself.

The former Emmerdale, Bad Girls and The Bill star, who was born and lives in Calderdale, said: "This is such a worthwhile event and I'm honoured to be involved with it, everyone of these people is a hero and it's only right they are rewarded in this way."

After the awards were handed out, guests were encouraged to relax while pop band NYK played a selection of classic hits until midnight.

John Furbisher, Courier editor, said: "It has been a resounding success and a tremendous evening of fun was had by all. Now we're looking forward to 2009."
