Tragedy is inspiration for runners

TRAGEDY has inspired two Provident Insurance staff to don running shoes for charity.

The two men will join a group of 12 for the 13-mile Great North Run on September 30 and hope to raise money for premature baby charity Bliss.

One of them, David Jowett, 30 is a sales support supervisor for Provident based at Halifax. He and his wife Claire lost their child Thomas Harrison in July last year. The baby was born prematurely after 22 weeks.

He said: "After he died we were both looking for answers into why we had gone through the loss and no one seemed able to give it to us.

"Then we were introduced to Piggybankkids which supports ground-breaking research to save newborn lives and solve pregnancy problems."

They decided to help and have since raised 5,000. Mr Jowett said: "We looked into Bliss and decided that this too was one that could benefit from fund-raising."

Co-worker and friend Andy Haslam, 36, of Northowram, Halifax, will be joining Mr Howett for the run.

He said: "Two years ago my daughter Freya was born and was immediately transferred to the special care baby unit.

"It was a horrible time for me and my partner.

"We were supposed to be celebrating the joy of having our baby but at the same time we were being rushed to the specialist unit. It was just horrific.

"I wanted to be able to give back so that we could help others that were in a similar situation."

The two are hoping that they will be able to raise 4,000 for the charity and will be holding fund-raising activities.
