THE idea that recycling boxes and bags might eventually be replaced with a multi-use wheelie bin has prompted widespread interest, Calderdale Council was told.
But one councillor has already poured cold water on the suggestion.
Councillor Graham Reason (Con, Northowram and Shelf), who once proposed charging householders 10p a time for dustbin liners, said he could not see the point of making changes to the recycling system.
“To see two wheelie bins outside people’s houses would be awful,” he said.
But the council’s economy and environment spokesman Barry Collins (Lab, Illingworth and Mixenden) said the idea was just one of many designed to encourage householders to recycle more.
“A similar debate is going on all over the country but we have made no decisions at this stage,” he said.
Some areas already have wheelie bins for recyclable material, which is sorted by the refuse collectors or at a depot rather than by householders.
