It is business as usual for many today despite the snow blanket covering Calderdale.

Paths were being cleared during the early morning as businesses prepared to open as normally as possible.

Halifax Borough Market and the Piece Hall along with shops across the district refused to be beaten by the weather.

Market trader Michael Bryson, of Grosvenors said all staff reported for duty as normal travelling from as far as Bradford.

He said he expected his usual Friday customers.

“Many are `old school’ and the elderly will don their gear and come out - they don’t stop for a bit of snow,” he said.

Martin Westman runs the Fresh Box and Coffee Bean at Westgate.

He travelled in from Leeds and said he expected more customers to ring-in their orders for delivery.

Trade would be hit and he said many businesses would probably close early with the weather forecast predicting more snow through the day.

Many businesses tweeted @hxcourier to inform customers they were open as normal.

They included the Mecca Halifax bingo hall; Fleece Inn; Design House and UK Artworks.

A spokeswoman for Pennine Housing said staffing levels were normal and people had travelled into work from neighbouring towns.

“We are ok and have plenty of cover,” she said.
