A BUSY commuter route had to be shut for several hours after boulders came hurtling down on to the side of the road.

The Elland bypass was closed until 4pm yesterday between the Elland slip road and the junction with the M62 after the rockfall overnight.

Council engineers and contractors were called in early yesterday morning to assess the area and make it safe.

To catch any more rocks that might fall on to the road and footpath, a rock trap has been constructed in the highway verge.

The footpath running behind the highway verge has also been diverted to protect pedestrians.

While the bypass was shut, drivers were forced to leave the bypass at the Elland slip road and use the old Huddersfield Road.

The bypass remained open for drivers coming from the motorway towards Halifax.
