Twitter users following Canadian astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield (@Cmdr_Hadfield) - who became an internet sensation when he recorded a version of David Bowie’s Space Oddity from orbit - have been treated to a spectacular collection of photographs of Earth, taken from the international space station.

Among them is this picture of West Yorkshire as you’ve never seen it before. In the image, captured above Yorkshire’s night sky, Leeds can clearly be seen as the biggest and brightest settlement.

Below, left, of Leeds is Bradford, with Wakefield off to the right. And towards the bottom left of the picture is Halifax, with Elland, Brighouse and, over the visible M62, Huddersfield to Halifax’s right.

Commander Hadfield, 53, was Canada’s first professional astronaut to live aboard the space station. He relinquished command of the space station last Sunday and became an internet sensation when he bowed out of orbit by posting a music video on YouTube of his own custom version of David Bowie’s Space Oddity.
