A CIVIC reception could be on the cards to mark the arrival of the Olympic torch in Calderdale next summer.

Mayor of Calderdale Nader Fekri said the unique event should be a cause for major celebrations and an opportunity for the whole district to showcase its sporting prowess.

He has now signed the official invitation enabling the torch to be carried through Brighouse and Halifax, on the way to Bradford, on Sunday, June 24.

“Naturally, I am disappointed that it won’t be travelling through the Upper Calder Valley but it is an event which I hope the entire community will support and make the most of.

“This occasion will set a benchmark by which our communities will be judged,” said Coun Fekri.

Helping to mark yesterday’s announcement at Halifax Piece Hall was double world champion wheelchair racer and Paralympic hopeful Hannah Cockroft.

She is currently involved in a rigorous training regime with nine sessions a week, each lasting up to two hours.

“It is brilliant that the torch is coming here,” she said..

“As well as giving everyone a chance to be involved in the world’s biggest sporting event, it will provide a great platform for Calderdale’s sporting talent.”
