ABOUT £350,000 has been spent over the years on designs for a railway station in Elland.
And from next week, four trains an hour will pass by the town.
But there is still no date in sight for work to begin on the station, which could cost up to 3 million, Calderdale Council was told.
"There are about 17,000 people living in the Elland, Greetland and Stainland area who could make use of this station and the four trains an hour which will go to and from Leeds," said Keith Watson.
"We are one of the few towns in West Yorkshire without a rail service and it is time we had an opening date," he said.
Councillor Watson (Lib-Dem, Greetland and Stainland) called on the council to sanction a development brief and to put pressure on Metro to make the Elland station into a reality.
The council is due to begin consulting on a blueprint for developments in the Elland district in January.
One of the aims is to provide a station, reduce reliance on cars and make the area more attractive for people live and work in.
Analysis by the council shows that the planned site close to Lowfields Business Park does present some problems in that it is remote from the town centre and pedestrian access is poor and may feel unsafe.
Any development must include park and ride facilities and a bus stop with town centre services. Access along Witsons Lane is considered preferable and planners have recommended that the platforms should be built in a way which enhances views of the surrounding hills.
Councillor Geoffrey Wain-wright (Con, Skircoat), who is the council's public transport spokesman, said he would be pressing for the station to be built as soon as possible.
