The loss of the title has been met with sadness from community leaders in Halifax.

Rev Canon Hilary Barber of Halifax Minster, the spiritual home of the Duke of Wellington’s, said: “It’s a sad day for Halifax, given its historic links with the Duke of Wellington Regiment and the associations between the regiment and the Minster in particular.

“But I’m sure that men and women from Halifax will continue to join the Yorskhire Regiment as they have in the past.”

Halifax MP Linda Riordan said: “The Duke of Wellington name resonated with people and was something that survived the years of change; in that sense it is a shame it has gone. I am sure many current and former members of the regiment will be nostalgic for its passing. The regiment has been a strong presence in our town and long may that continue to be the case, even with a name change.”
