Both of the district’s MPs have spoken out against their impending 11 per cent pay award.

Calder Valley MP Craig Whittaker has asked for a House of Commons debate on whether the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) is fit for purpose.

Yesterday, Ipsa ignored criticism and said MPs salaries would rise by 11 per cent to £74,000 in 2015 and other benefits would be trimmed.

Mr Whittaker, who has said he would consider donating the rise to charity, said Ipsa had failed to reduce the cost of politics and raise the standing of MPs in the public eye.

“It’s totally out of touch with what is going on in the country,” he said.

Mr Whittaker said workers were seeing their benefits eroded but were not in line for 11 per cent pay rises, and his former colleagues in retail had endured several years of stagnant wages.

Halifax MP Linda Riordan said she would not be taking the rise.

“I am totally opposed to it and I will not be taking it. Many of my constituents, especially in these tough times when their incomes are so badly squeezed, would be frankly appalled at the increase and the sooner the idea is dropped the better.”
