A landlord who only pulled his first pint the day before he took over the business is celebrating his pub being named the best in Calderdale.

The Masons Arms, on Bacup Road, Todmorden, has been presented with Halifax and Calderdale CAMRA’s pub of the year award 2013.

Wayne Warburton, who runs the pub with his brothers Glynn and Frank and his sister Shirley Simpson, thanked the local community for its support since the family took over the business 18 months ago and have helped it become the first pub in Todmorden to win the award.

“Without the community we would not have won this award,” Wayne said.

“The pub had been run down for a couple of years before we came in.

“A lot of people had stopped coming in but now everyone comes in.

“That’s the place we want.”

Wayne and his family took over the pub in early 2012.

“We had a bit of spare money and decided to have a go and try to create a pub that we would want to drink in,” he said.

“I was totally new to the industry.

“We opened on the Wednesday and I only pulled my first pint on the Tuesday.

“The first few months were really hard but we are up and running now.

“It’s the most interesting job in the world.”

Wayne thanked his staff for all their hard work and support, and CAMRA for coming to visit the pub.

A keen cyclist, he is aiming to retain the title next year when the Tour de France arrives.
