Cash boost to improve life for over 50s

A cash boost to a community group will help improve the quality of life for people who are over 50 in Calderdale.

The Calderdale Forum 50+ has received a grant of nearly £10,000 from the National Lottery ‘Awards for All’ and £5,000 from the Community Foundation for Calderdale’s ‘Grants for Health and Wellbing’.

The cash be used to recruit volunteers to reach out to lonely and isolated older people in Calderdale. They will help signpost people to groups, activities and services to get them out and about and help them stay healthy, safe and warm. The first Network Calderdale 50+ event took place at Queen’s Road Neighbourhood Centre on Monday.

Christine Potter, forum chairwoman, said: “It’s all too easy to become isolated at any age, even in friendly, caring communities. We want our volunteers to pass on information about local community groups welcoming new members, places to go and services that can give a bit of extra help to make a difference to someone’s health and wellbing. We hope to produce a brochure about the many good things available for 50+ people in Calderdale by the end of the year. We also want to pass on issues that older people themselves identify as being important to their wellbeing.” For information email lhoulden@acckorg.uk or phone 01422 348777 ext 211.
