A Barkisland widow who decorated her home with illumnations at Christmas (right) in memory of her late husband has raised £1,198 for Overgate Hospice.

Former Calderdale conservation officer Pat Stewart, 63, paid tribute to her late husband Paul by decorating their home at with Christmas lights.

Paul died after a brave battle against lung cancer at the age of 64 at Overgate Hospice, Elland, last October.

Mrs Stewart said: “Paul always used to love decorating the house at Chistmas, so the family thought this would be a fitting tribute.

“We wanted to give a little something back for the help we received at the hospice - they do such a fantastic job and although couldn’t pay them back, this was a small way we could say thank you.”

She said: “I was touched by the response - there was a five-year-old girl who emptied her money box and a 15-year-old girl gave her full day’s wage from the first day at her Saturday job.”

£1,000 was donated by an anonymous donor.
