A football fan is embarking on a 30-mile run from the Shay to Old Trafford in aid of the NSPCC.

David Charlesworth, who moved to Halifax from Manchester a few years ago, has raised £300 so far but is hoping to reach £1,000 in donations.

He will be undertaking the gruelling six-hour run on Sunday, March 23 via Copley, Sowerby Bridge and Ripponden.

The 39-year-old said: “I’m a Man United fan but I’ve got a soft spot for Halifax.

“I’ve been dragged to a few games by one of my friends so I thought it’d be a good place to start from.

“I thought the NSPCC is a charity that doesn’t get as much attention as some others and I wanted to help people who can’t help themselves.

“I do a lot of long-distance running anyway so I thought I might as well do some for a good cause.

“A couple of friends will be joining me a long the way, doing a couple of miles with me and then drop off - and checking I don’t cheat!

“I did a marathon three years ago and did that in just under four hours, but this is going over the tops towards Rochdale so it will be a lot tougher. But I wanted it to be a real challenge.”

In 2012-13, NSPCC helpline advisors responded to nearly 51,000 contacts from adults concerned about a child, more than half of which were serious enough to warrant referral to local police or children’s services for further investigation.
